Sketches/Concept

Everything starts with a sketch, an idea first needs vision before it becomes substance, and this ladies and gentlemen is the place where you can find such things. Sketches of all kinds, character concepts, layouts, plans, colour guides, you name it, you’ll find it here. Most are sketched using a Wacom graphics tablet and the drawing package Open Canvas 1.1, with a few done using the good old pencil and paper method.

Colour

Colour is the second thing to bring life to a drawing, adding in some bright and vibrant colours to take you down a happy adventure, or some dark and unsettling shades to take you down the path of villainy and suspense. Dare you step your way through this gallery and it’s varied occupants? This stage is when a picture really shines, the designs are complete and the images get a fresh coat of paint ready to face the world. Most of them are coloured using Adobe Photoshop.

Comics

An image can speak a thousand words, so what do a collection of them do? They tell a story! Expanding on a single image drawing, these comics show an ability to tell a narrative through a progressing collection of pictures. These comics also lead the way to planning storyboards for larger projects. Most are inspired by Japanese comic style and were created with black and white printers in mind, using Manga Studio EX

Animation

Taking the idea of sequential drawings one step further, animation bounds in, taking all the previous steps and adding in more frames. This allows us to convey movement in real time and act out each scene in full. From simple mouth movements to full body motions animation truly bring pictures to life. The 2D animations contained within were brought to life with Adobe Flash, while the 3D animations with 3D Studio Max.

Pixel Artwok

Taking a step back in terms of the large scale of a full animation, this section encompasses a smaller side of animation. Quite often used for Video Games, Pixel artwork is a small scale recreation of a larger idea. Originally when Video Games used a much smaller resolution screen, in order to get the images conveyed, the characters and backgrounds had to be created using very limited space. These “sprites” were created using a small amount of pixels but still withheld the complex animations of their larger counterparts. Even now some games still use these methods, however most are limited to the handheld systems we use today.
